African Green Revolution forum honours top leaders

The African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) has praised leaders and visionaries in promoting sustainable agriculture in Africa at a gala dinner in Arusha

African leaders were presented with awards that recognised their achievements in helping build a sustainable African agri-business industry and for their contribution to food security.

At the start of the forum Kofi Annan, chairman of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), explained, “Our focus on improving the productivity and profitability of smallholder farmers - most of whom are women - cannot waver. They are the ones who put food on our tables. They are the ones who care for our land and water resources.”

The AGRF Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr Namanga Ngongi for his contribution to the transformation of Africa’s agricultural sector.

The recipients of the Yara Prize, which paid recognition to figures who have played a role in enhancing food security in Africa and driving an African-led Green Revolution on the continent, were Dr Agnes Kalibata, minister of agriculture and animal resources in Rwanda, and Dr Eleni Gabre-Madhin, CEO of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) in Ethiopia.
