Kenya purchases tractors for Kwale food production

The Kwale county government has spent more than US$900,000 in buying tractors, motorcycles and ambulances for use in emergency services offered to Kwale residents

A total of 20 tractors to be delivered have cost the county nearly US$480,000, while 40 motorcycles for ward and sub-county administrators were purchased at US$34,000,000 and an order for 10 ambulances set the county back more than US$97,000.

“Eradicating poverty can be accomplished either by having money in your pocket or food at the shamba that is why we decided to purchase tractors for our people,” the county governor Salim Mvurya said.

Mvurya said however that farmers in the county will not pay anything to use the tractors for farming purposes.

The governor also added that the Kenyan government will issue free certified seeds, which locals can plant after their land has been cleared.

“Agricultural officers should now work hard and train our people because we don't want to continue with the old methods of farming which have left us without food, it is time for new technologies to be applied tractors are here to till free of charge,” Mvurya said.
