Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture has ordered the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) and the Cereals and Mixed Crops board to start buying produce from the farmers
As reported in the Citizen, the NFRA will look into modalities of buying cereals from farmers and the Mixed Crops board will monitor purchasing various crops before searching for markets.
Japhet Hasunga, minister of agriculture, said that the initiative will help farmers to improve their crop production for both food and commercial purposes.
The source further noted that the order comes shortly after the NFRA signed an agreement with the World Food Programme (WFP) to supply the latter with cereals.
Hasunga commended NFRA for the construction of silos in seven of the agency's zones, which is expected to significantly increase the agency's storage capacity to 700,000 tonnes by 2025 from 251,000 tonnes at present.
The US$55mn project is funded by the government of Poland, said the source.
