The Pyrethrum Board of Kenya has distributed more than US$13,000 of funding to Kenyan farmers in Kisii and Nyamira counties
The managing director of the board, Alfred Busolo, stated that the money issued to farmers was accumulated arrears they were owed between September-December 2011 and June-July 2013.
Busolo said Kisii farmers will receive a total of more than US$8,000 while those from Nyamira will receive more than US$3,000, the board revealed.
The counties produced high quality pyrethrum, however, due to poor payment the farmers abandoned the crop.
Busolo, who attended alongside general manager Mary Magati and marketing manager Lucy Komen, said the board has implemented measures to encourage farmers to resume in pyrethrum farming.
The director was speaking in Kisii town yesterday when he presented a dummy cheque to agriculture executive Vincent Sagwe.
“We have brought more than US$13,000 accrued to pyrethrum farmers in Kisii and Nyamira counties between 2011 and 2013,” Busolo said.
The Kenyan government announced it will roll out a US$3.4mn pyrethrum regulatory authority intended for nursery and pyrethrum cooperatives to transform the industry.
