Innovation at the heart of VICTAM & GRAPAS International 2019

VICTAM & GRAPAS International 2019 exhibition and series of accompanying conferences were successfully held at the KoelnMesse in Cologne, Germany from 12-14 June

A wide range of products were on display including the newly launched products and machinery at the different stands from 248 exhibitors from 31 countries.

Exhibitors were able to have discussions and negotiations with their clients and potential clients that they had met at the show. Around 84.3 per cent of the visitors were final decision makers in the purchasing process.

Almost 5,000 visitors from 85 countries attended the event. Although the majority of the visitors were from Europe, a growing percentage of the visitors are from other parts of the world, for example, eight per cent from Asia, seven per cent from the Middle East and Africa, five per cent from Latin America and five per cent from the rest of the world.

The conference delegates confirmed the quality of the papers presented at the numerous conferences. The conferences had extensive programmes.

The newly introduced International Feed Technology Conference (IFTC), a cooperation between the University of Wageningen and the Victam Foundation, was a great success. A number of 120 delegates from 18 countries listened to presentations of (among others) Prof Dr Jürgen Zentek from the University of Berlin, Dr Menno Thomas from Zetadec and Dr Reza Abdollahi, Massey University.

Programme of conferences and seminars were as follows

· Aquafeed Horizons 2019 by Aquafeed.com: About production technology and specialist ingredients for aquaculture feeds.

· Bioenergy International Pellet Workshop by Bioenergy Europe: About how technology is innovating the efficiency and quality of pellet production.

· Feed Efficiency Seminar by All About Feed: About new approaches to feed processing and formulation.

· Feed Strategy Seminar by WATT Global Media with the theme: Feed additive solutions for reducing emissions in livestock and poultry production.

· GMP+ Feed Safety Seminar by GMP+ International.

· Grain Storage Seminar by Milling & Grain by Perendale Publishers Ltd: Short presentations on a variety of subjects including silo design, aeration fans, grain coolers, ozone treatment of grain, grain sampling, remote monitoring systems for silos and much more.

· GRAPAS & Global Milling Conference by Perendale Publishers Ltd: A full day of informative and innovative presentations from the milling industry's best and brightest.

· IFTC 2019 by Wageningen University & VICTAM Foundation: Directed towards the evolvements in animal feed processing form a scientific and technology standpoint.

· Petfood Forum Europe by WATT Global Media: Education on the latest research and newest information on pet food nutrition, global pet food marketing trends and growth, pet food safety, processing, packaging and much more.

Exhibitors like Stolz, Promtek, KSE, UWT, Clextral, Statec Binder and Riedel Filtertechnik presented technical seminars.

Innovation awards

The GRAPAS Award:

· Buhler with the LumoVision, a data-driven optical sorting technology that closely targets grains affected by Aspergillus Fungi, the cause of Aflatoxin contamination.

· Petkus with OptoSelector 901t, a unified system of analysis combining the full-colour RGB method and a special light transmission method based on the translucent features of the seeds.

· Selis with their Dynamic Angular Positioning System (DAPS). The DAPS system has brought a big solution to the important problems on the smooth roll passages and fine grooved roll passages.

The Animal Feed & Nutrition Award:

· Van Aarsen for their Hot Start Steam mixer. The Hot Start Steam Mixer helps to optimise the feed conditioning process and feed safety while minimising spoilage.

· Geelen Counterflow for the Counterflow Cooler Plus which is a new generation counterflow cooler that improves product quality, operational costs and efficiency.

· Famsun for their SWFL170 Vertical Pulveriser. The SWFL170 vertical pulveriser is designed for particle size reduction in the industry of aquatic feed production, including but not limited to the feed production for fishes, shrimps, crabs and turtles.

The Aquafeed Award:

· Prairie Aquatech for their ME-PRO protein ingredient for aqua feed. ME-PRO is a plant-based protein ingredient that reduces aquaculture’s reliance on dwindling supplies of fishmeal.

· Geelen Counterflow took the award for their electric dryer. Recovering the energy and water contained in the exhaust air of the dryer, the Electric Dryer will reduce energy consumption for drying by up to 65 per cent.
