Rwanda hosts 2013 agriculture expo

The Mulindi Agriculture exhibition grounds in Rwandas Gasabo district welcomed exhibitors to demonstrate modern farming techniques at this years agriculture expo

Farmers in Rwanda met at the event where 191 exhibitors, including eight foreign exhibitors, demonstrated ways in which modern agriculture could improve harvests.

The agriculture exhibition was opened by the minister of agriculture, Agnes Kalibata, who praised all the companies that wereinvesting in agriculture and highlighted the need to invest in agro-processing.

Exhibitors unveiled mechanised farming methods and crop multiplication among other things.

Visitors at the event expressed their surprise by the improved quality and yield as a result of modern farming, event organisers revealed.

Closing the expo, Minister of Trade and Industry François Kanimba said, "I am impressed by how farmers have shifted from basic, at home farming, to competitive commercialised farming."

Kanimba also encouraged farmers to work in cooperatives because it is the best way to gain bargaining power and access to government incentives.

"Cooperatives help farmers to negotiate competitive markets," he remarked.
