The World Save the Bees Fund (WSBF) has announced it will organise an international charitable event to address the rapid decline in honeybee numbers
The Save the Bees Wall Installation project will commence on 23 May 2015 with the aim of drawing attention to the plight of the world’s honey bees, which the Germany-based organisation said are disappearing at an alarming rate.
“We are inviting people worldwide to become participants of a unique project which serves to draw attention to one of the global issues of the 21st century, the loss of our honey bees,” said WSBF vice-president Peter Lenk.
The organisation have also called upon volunteers to construct wall installations — hexagonal constructions mimicking honeycomb — in the open spaces of cities around the world.
“The wall may be of any size, design, and materials — paper, textiles, wood, metal, cans, tires, etc. It depends only on your fantasy, creativity, and team self-expression,” Lenk explained, adding that Guinness World Records was also taking an interest in the event.
WSBF has warned of a ‘biological disaster’ as bee numbers around the world continue to decline; particularly in Europe and North America where numbers have fallen by as much as 30 per cent annually in recent years, according to the International Bee Research Association (IBRA).
The WSBF said that bees are vital for human agriculture and natural ecosystems alike, as they are one of the most important pollinators on the planet.
Practically all fruit and berry trees are pollinated by honeybees and the insects are vital for the production of around 25 per cent of all foodstuff consumed by humans.
