Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu is considering dividing the agriculture ministry, he revealed at the Agritech Expo held at the GART Research Centre in Chisamba
Lungu was considering creating a separate ministry of fisheries and livestock, in response to complaints that government funding is skewed in favour of agriculture, revealed a report in Zambia’s Daily Mail.
Speaking after touring the stands at the agri-business event in Chisamba, the president said the government was willing to discuss the issue, insisting, “If need be, we are not afraid of breaking away from tradition and setting new standards. We will discuss with the minister, Cabinet and so on. It is food for thought.”
The Agritech Expo was described as a “massive success” by organisers after welcoming more than 10,000 visitors over three days, including 110 exhibitors and a range of commercial and emerging farmers, and government officials.
The event offered a forum to network and showcase goods and services, as well as free, practical workshops to assist farmers with the technical knowledge and skills necessary to increase productivity.
